Practice makes perfect for students in the OCM BOCES McEvoy Senior Cosmetology Class. During the school year, students in the class are given a unique opportunity to learn and master their trade by working with clients during their weekly “Salon Day.” From October to June, Salon Day is held every Friday when classes are in session. During this time, the public is welcome to stop in for salon appointments for a variety of salon services such as cuts, colors, manicures and pedicures.
Prior to working during salon hours, students have spent many hours behind the chair and in the classroom, practicing styles on mannequins and learning the techniques involved in cosmetology. The salon hours give students the opportunity to step away from working with a mannequin and gain experience working with clients. The Senior Cosmetology Class trains and teaches students to become hair stylists, estheticians, and nail designers, while also providing them with the skills involved in salon management and business ownership. Students involved in Salon Day have completed a number of training hours prior to working with any of their clients.
“Hair styling is just something I’ve always wanted to do,” said McEvoy student Allison Poppe-Rosen, from Homer CSD. “I love the hands-on experience from Salon Day.”
During the summer months, the McEvoy Salon Day will be open for an additional four weeks, Monday through Friday. Appointment times are available from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a break from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The summer schedule is as follows:
Week 1: Monday, June 24 to Friday, June 28
Week 2: Monday, July 1 to Wednesday, July 3
Week 3: Monday, July 8 to Friday, July 12
Week 4: Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19
