Media Marketing Communications students up close and personal with Public Affairs

The OCM BOCES Media Marketing Communications’ senior class participated in a taping of Connect:NY with host Susan Arbetter. Connect:NY, is WCNY’s statewide TV news and public affairs series, which continues to convene conversations that matter to all citizens of New York State.  Erin McCormack, Executive Producer of WCNY, took the time to walk students through all phases of the production. She discussed the nuances associated with producing a news show of this magnitude. Students spoke with production assistants to learn more about lighting, camera operation, set design and sound and watched the pre-production setup in the control room. The seniors observed the host in hair and makeup before the show, and escorted guests from the lobby to the green room before the taping began. Students were able to watch the promos being taped from the studio and the majority of the actual production from the green room along with Jimmie Johnson, Syracuse Police Officer and Alexander Marion, Mayor Miner’s Press Secretary.

The topic for the show: Race, Policing and Respect in New York State will air on November 17.  It included conversations among regional leaders and experts including: Stephanie Miner – Mayor, City of Syracuse; Frank Fowler – Chief of Police, Syracuse City Police Department; Sam Rowser – Executive Director, OnPoint for College; Derrick Dorsey – President, Syracuse City School Board and Executive Director, Boys and Girls Club of Syracuse; Khalid Bey – Syracuse Common Councilor and (via Skype), Jens David Ohlin – Assoc. Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law, Cornell Law School. The discussions centered on how we as a community can foster both safety and mutual respect between communities of color and the police at a time when mistrust and misunderstanding is prevalent on all sides.
